Verizon to add $2 bill-pay charge, admits 4G network (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Verizon Wireless, which this month angered customers with three separate data service problems, said on Thursday it will add a $2 fee for one-time telephone and online bill payments.

The planned change, to take effect on January 15, was greeted by a storm of criticism.

Consumer blog Engadget said charging customers to pay was "downright ludicrous." Another tech website, cnet.com, said the move "made little sense."

"The fee is designed to address costs incurred by us for only those customers who choose to make one-time bill payments in alternate payment channels (online, mobile, telephone) and who choose not to use the other options available to them ...," Verizon Wireless spokesman Thomas Pica said in an email.

Verizon Wireless rivals AT&T Inc and Sprint Nextel Corp said they do not charge their customers for any bill-payment options.

In addition, some customers complained on Verizon's online forum on Thursday about problems activating their new phones.

The episode followed reports of a problem with the company's high-speed network on Wednesday. Verizon said on Thursday that it had resolved that issue overnight.

"GROWING PAINS" WITH 4G NETWORK

Verizon, the biggest U.S. mobile service provider, admitted on Thursday it was having "growing pains" with its new fourth generation, 4G, high-speed wireless network and had suffered several separate technical problems that caused service outages.

After saying earlier in the day that services on its older third generation, 3G, network were not affected, the company admitted Thursday night that 3G customers were also affected.

Verizon said it had proactively "moved" its fourth-generation (4G) wireless users onto its third-generation (3G) network to ensure all would have a data connection.

However, Verizon admitted that for brief periods, such as on Wednesday, 4G customers could not connect to the 3G Network as quickly as the company would have liked.

The company also said that it is working closely with its network suppliers to ensure smooth functioning of its 4G network, while estimating that connectivity has been available at about 99 percent of the time this year.

Verizon Wireless statement is available at:

http://r.reuters.com/wav75s

Some customers had earlier complained that they were having 3G service problems, while others said their 4G service was being restored on Thursday morning. One person complained about the lack of a public announcement.

"At least acknowledge there is a problem, do you really expect your paying customers to not notice??" one person wrote on Verizon's online message board.

Verizon Wireless spokesman Thomas Pica told Reuters that the company does not plan to compensate its customers who had experienced service problems.

Earlier this month the company, which has long boasted that its service is "most reliable," faced two data service problems.

On December 8 some Verizon customers were unable to access the Internet on their wireless devices for about 24 hours. The company had to fix another problem on December 21.

Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc.

8,000 Staff Strike at LG Display's Chinese Factory over Bonuses

By: Ian Mansfield |

?Around 8,000 staff at a Nanjing factory owned by LG Display have gone on strike over claims that South Korean staff were offered larger bonuses than local Chinese workers.

According to China Labor Watch, the Korean workers at the plant received a year-end bonus equivalent to six months' salary while Chinese workers only received a bonus of one month's salary.

Reportedly, the strike is still ongoing, despite threats made by management to close the plant entirely and prosecute the leaders of the strike. The factory made an offer to double the year-end bonus for Chinese workers to two months' salary, but it was rejected by workers who are pushing for absolute equality in the bonus system.

Initially, only the workers from the number four factory building took part in the demonstration, but they were soon joined by workers from the complex's four other factory buildings. Before long, the protest had completely shut down approximately 80 different assembly lines.

According to the workers, the factory has played host to several smaller strikes in the past.

Workers at LG's factories in Guangdong Province have also reported on Chinese websites that they have been subject to the same unfair treatment as their Nanjing counterparts.

Killing on Oxford Street Mars Boxing Day in London

The annual British day of bargain-hunting was cut short in London on Monday, as a young man in London was stabbed to death just after noon.

The Metropolitan Police said that 10 people were being held in connection with the stabbing, which happened in the center of the city?s West End shopping district as it was packed with thousands of holiday shoppers taking advantage of Boxing Day sales.

Much of the famous shopping street remained closed into the evening as the police continued to investigate.

The police reported a second stabbing hours later, Sky News reported, though it was not clear whether the two episodes were connected.

Mark Dunne, of London?s Metropolitan Police, said the first attack took place after two groups of young people appeared to have become involved in a large-scale altercation, The Associated Press reported. He said the police were likely to find many witnesses. ?This is probably the busiest place in the United Kingdom right now, on the busiest shopping day,? he said.

A little like Black Friday in the United States, the day after Christmas in Britain has become a traditional time of barnstorming stores offering deep discounts.

But unlike their American counterparts, British shoppers are not known for engaging in the sorts of stampedes and violence that have marred Black Friday sales in the United States in recent years.

A Twitter user named Kentis Gopalla posted the following image of panicked shoppers on Oxford Street after the stabbing:

Another picture posted to Twitter by a London-based user showed a man seated behind an area cordoned off by police as an officer stands over him.

The motive for the attack in London was not immediately known. Sky News reported that it occurred in or around a Foot Locker branch along the busy street.

That appeared to be confirmed by video posted online later on Monday that showed a chaotic scene outside a Foot Locker on Oxford Street as the police struggled to control crowds and emergency medical technicians worked on a man lying on the pavement.

It was not the first time that shoppers on Oxford Street were scattered by violence. In August, a similar stabbing occurred outside an H&M clothing store along the street, The Daily Mirror reported.

British shoppers also faced snarled transportation on Monday as transit workers staged strikes, The Guardian reported.

Glade Spring tornado victims count their blessings at Christmas

GLADE SPRING, Va. ? After the tornado in April, Santa Claus was found in a field behind where Joe Lester?s house used to be.

This month, the three-foot-tall plastic decoration stood lit up in front of Lester?s new house, staked down in case of wind.

?He?d survived a lot already,? said Lester of the faded but still-glowing rendition of St. Nick, ?even being stolen.?

In an almost-finished new home still strewn with tools, the living room could have been on a Christmas card, with presents stocked under a tree covered in bright blue lights and ornaments that, somehow, had also survived the storm.

?

What was lost

When his family?s house was blown apart on April 28, the night when devastating tornadoes struck Washington County, Lester never imagined he?d be in a new house by Christmas.

?Really, in the blink of an eye, everything was all gone,? he said. ?It?s just amazing that more people didn?t perish?. to be alive after this?that?s as good a gift as you could ask for.?

But standing with his wife in their new living room ? she scrubbed the insulation from the tornado-tossed lights so she could use them on the tree ? he said the volunteers who came in droves to rebuild his neighborhood have been amazing.

Including his four houses destroyed on Stagecoach Road which belonged to family members. Eight months after the storm, all of them ? and most of their neighbors ? are back in their homes.

?I lack a little siding is really what I lack,? he said, ?and then a lot of cleanup.?

He said he still has fences to build ? and a pasture filled with unimaginable debris. Even then, he said, the landscape is forever changed. And some of his neighbors have moved away for good.

?Trees that I played in when I was a boy, barns, all that?s gone?. It?s still so much different that it?s just hard to get used to,? he said.

?Probably the worst thing is the fear of what could come this spring. I guess that?s probably laying heavy on the mind?. Ever since this happened, the wind blows here it seems like all the time.?

?

What was gained

On Dec. 14, Lester saw a sign of hope that he?d never seen before, not in his 56-year lifetime living on Stagecoach Road: Christmas carolers, more than 80 of them, walking and singing on a? warm December night.

They came from Glade Spring Church of God, walking through the neighborhood from their brand new building, rebuilt with the help of donations after it was leveled by the storm.

?[Some of] the older people, they were crying, and they would come out and sing with you,? said church usher Michael Rosenberry. ?We all had a good time. It was just a good time in the Lord.?

The carolers were there from four different churches ? all different denominations ? in Glade Spring.

?The people in the community, they?ve come together as one. Not just as churches, not just as houses, not just as buildings, we?ve all come together as one whole community,? said church member Vida DeBord, describing what?s changed since the tornadoes struck.

?We?ve met so many people that live around us that we?ve never met, and now we are friends. We see each other on the street, and everybody is talking and smiling.?

The church, meanwhile, is better than before, with a new fellowship hall, kitchen, classrooms and sound technology ? and an elevator that makes all the facilities handicapped accessible.

Though the church?s insurance didn?t cover the full cost of rebuilding, DeBord said donations poured in ? enough, even, to replace the neon cross that?s been visible on Interstate 81 since the 1970s, and to add a steeple with a bell.

?We?ve had donations,? said Steve DeBord, a deacon in the church and Vida?s husband. ?We?ve had people just get off the interstate to donate funds to rebuild the church.?

When materials came in that were more than the church needed, they were sent to their neighbors, who were working to rebuild homes along Stagecoach Road.

?God will supply, and he has,? said Vida DeBord. ?God has supplied.?

?

Christmas in Glade

Still holding the smell of fresh carpet and fresh paint, the sanctuary was nearly full on Sunday morning.

Pastor James Walls said it was special to be spending Christmas in the new building, which was dedicated just before Thanksgiving.

?On April 29 we were just staring at a pile of rubble, as much of the community behind us was,? he said. ?As you can see, today most of the houses have been rebuilt. Some people are struggling, but things are starting to get back to normal.?

Sunday?s Christmas play featured Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus under a cardboard stable, with animals and a tiny angel with a tinsel halo; the sermon was on seeing Jesus.

?It?s not the gifts you get under the tree, it?s not how expensive they are or how beautiful they are, it?s Jesus,? Walls said, addressing the congregation on the meaning of Christmas. ?He is the light of the world?. He is for everyone, everyone in the whole world.?

As the congregation stood among the brand new pews with brand new shape-note hymnals, singing filled the air with the sounds of a guitar, piano, drums and the rising murmur of prayer.

?We?ve been blessed beyond measure. It was hard?but now we know that God had a purpose,? Walls said.

?People have seen how tragedy can bring [people] together and how God has brought us through, and have the faith here to believe in Him, trust in Him that He can bring us through it no matter what it is.?

Cancer Patients 'Relying on Charity Handouts' for Fuel | TopNews ...

Macmillan-Cancer-SupportIn an immensely surprising disclosure, it has recently been revealed that scores of people suffering from cancer are seeking more and more support from charity handouts since they are struggling to pay the rapidly increasing fuel bills. The statements can clearly be made evident by sneaking a look at the figures revealed recently by the Macmillan Cancer Support.

In its recent statements, the Macmillan Cancer Support claimed that it had given in excess of ?2,548,563 to more than 12,669 patients suffering from various terminal forms of cancer during this year, marking a clear-cut increase from ?1.4m provided to around 7,369 patients earlier in 2006.

In addition, it has been reported that the charity is seeking an independent review, commissioned by the government, of the existing poverty in terms of fuel so as to place high-priority for patients suffering from cancer.

While expressing her opinion in this regard, Laura Keely, the campaign manager for Macmillan, claimed that it was entirely "shocking" that patients suffering from cancer need such sort of urgent help and assistance.

She added: ?To feel too scared to put the heating on because of soaring energy bills is an unacceptable reality for thousands of vulnerable cancer patients who feel the cold more and spend long periods of time at home?.

Since the establishment of the charity, some 100 years back, Douglas Macmillan, the founder of the charity was keenly devoted on providing all sorts of care and assistance needed by cancer patients by providing packs of coal for the sake of keeping them warm during the time of need.

On the other hand, the charity has claimed that as much as 70% of patients suffering from various detrimental forms of cancer, especially those below 55 years of age, have comparatively lesser income once they are diagnosed with cancer, mainly because their illness proves extremely influential for reducing their aptitude to earn.

India Welcomes Report of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission of Sri Lanka and Urges Implementation of Recommendations

This is the text of an official communique released by the Ministry of External Affairs(MEA), India on December 25 th2011- In response to a question the Official Spokesperson (MEA) said:??? The report of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC), was tabled by the Government of Sri Lanka in its Parliament on 16 December. While we are still studying the report which runs into over 400 pages, I can share with you some initial comments on its contents.

2. The Government of India welcomes the public release of the LLRC report and takes note of the assurance given by the Government of Sri Lanka in Parliament about implementation of many of its recommendations.

3. The LLRC has recommended various constructive measures for addressing issues related to healing the wounds of the conflict and fostering a process of lasting peace and reconciliation in Sri Lanka. In particular, we have noted the proposed measures pertaining to information on missing persons and detainees, investigation of cases of disappearances and abductions, promotion of a trilingual policy, deployment of Tamil-speaking officers in all offices, curbing activities of illegal armed groups, reduction of high security zones, return of private lands by the military and demilitarization , including phasing out of the involvement of the security forces in civilian activities and restoration of civilian administration in the Northern Province. We have noted the assurance given by the Government of Sri Lanka in Parliament that it will ensure the withdrawal of security forces from all aspects of community life and confine their role exclusively to security matters.

4. Implementation of assurances to ensure speedy resettlement and genuine reconciliation, including early completion of the process of the return of Internally Displaced Persons and refugees to their respective homes, restoration of normal civilian life in affected areas would mark a major step forward in the process of reconciliation.

5. The LLRC report has underlined that the present situation provides a great window of opportunity to forge a consensual way forward towards reconciliation through a political settlement based on devolution of power. It recognises that a political solution is imperative to addressing the root cause of the conflict and notes that the Government should provide leadership to a political process which must be pursued for the purpose of establishing a framework for ensuring sustainable peace and security in the post-conflict environment.

6. In this context, we have been assured by the Government of Sri Lanka on several occasions in the past, of its commitment towards pursuit of a political process, through a broader dialogue with all parties, including the Tamil National Alliance, leading to the full implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Sri Lankan Constitution, and to go beyond, so as to achieve meaningful devolution of powers and genuine national reconciliation. We hope that the Government of Sri Lanka recognising the critical importance of this issue acts decisively and with vision in this regard. We will remain engaged with them through this process and offer our support in the spirit of partnership.

7. We have also noted the Government of Sri Lanka?s intention to set up a mechanism to carry out further investigations relating to instances of alleged human rights violations and incidents involving loss of civilian life. It is important to ensure that an independent and credible mechanism is put in place to investigate allegations of human rights violations, as brought out the LLRC, in a time-bound manner.

J.R. Martinez Jokes About Being Recognized By Fans

Newly crowned "Dancing With the Stars" champ and father-to-be J.R. Martinez is finding that being famous brings a lot of attention from fans. Last night he joked on his Twitter feed that he was recognized by a fan in Target, but she thought he was someone else.

"Walked thru #target earlier and a lady was staring at me. As I passed her she shouted, 'Sir, weren't you on #americanidol' I said no ma'am."

However, she just didn't believe him. "She then said, 'yes you were'. There was no way of me telling her other wise. She was convinced. I cracked up saying wish I could #sing."

So, if Martinez were to compete on "American Idol," what would he sing? He quipped that his first track would be British singer Adele's power ballad "Set Fire to the Rain."

Although Martinez claims he can't sing, maybe he can practice by singing lullabies to his daughter. He and girlfriend Diana Gonzalez-Jones recently confirmed that they are expecting a baby girl in 2012.

Longer Looks: Cancer Vaccines, Top Health Stories Of The Year ...

Every week, reporter Jessica Marcy selects interesting reading from around the Web.

Zocalo Public Square: How Doctors Die
Years ago, Charlie, a highly respected orthopedist and a mentor of mine, found a lump in his stomach. He had a surgeon explore the area, and the diagnosis was pancreatic cancer. ... He went home the next day, closed his practice, and never set foot in a hospital again. He focused on spending time with family and feeling as good as possible. Several months later, he died at home. He got no chemotherapy, radiation, or surgical treatment. Medicare didn't spend much on him. It's not a frequent topic of discussion, but doctors die, too. And they don't die like the rest of us. What's unusual about them is not how much treatment they get compared to most Americans, but how little (Dr. Ken Murray, 11/30).

Health Affairs: An MS Patient Loses Trust When She Finds Out Her Doctor Is Paid By Drug Companies
Last year, four years after showing initial symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS), I walked out the door of one neurologist's office and, after several months of searching, switched to a different doctor. It was the final act in a series of events that had gradually eroded my trust in the first neurologist's judgment, which I believe was colored by his financial relationships with drug companies who manufacture and market medicines for MS patients. ??Given my background in medical ethics, I was familiar with the potential conflicts of interest that exist for physicians participating in clinical pharmaceutical trials. Assuming that my neurologist was being compensated for running the trial, in addition to his earnings from seeing patients in his neurology practice, I?d asked him if that was the case, and he confirmed that it was (Maran Wolston, December 2011).

The New Republic: More Health Care Heresy From Newt
Newt Gingrich's past endorsement of an individual mandate has drawn fire from conservatives. But that's not his only health care heresy. In 2008, Gingrich made the case for another idea that became part of Obamacare and, in due time, the focus of right-wing attacks. Worse still, at least from the standpoint of conservatives, he did so by writing an op-ed for The New York Times. Oh, and did I mention he had some help? Gingrich had a co-author: John Kerry, the Democratic senator and former presidential nominee. ... they also acknowledged that ultimately the private sector couldn't solve this problem on its own. More action was necessary, they said, and that action had to come from government ? That's the problem for Gingrich when it comes to improving the delivery of health care. He isn?t crazy. But plenty of influential conservatives are (Jonathan Cohn, 12/13).

Newsweek: Could This Be The End Of Cancer?
By all rights, Shari Baker should have said her final goodbyes years ago. In 2005, more than a year after three doctors dismissed a lump under her arm as a harmless cyst, she was diagnosed with stage IV (metastatic) breast cancer ? In May 2006, she traveled to the University of Washington. The (cancer) vaccine was injected into her upper arm; she got five more shots over the next five months. Today, with scans detecting no cancer anywhere, Baker seems to have beaten some extremely stiff odds. ? By "cancer vaccine," scientists mean something that will stimulate the immune system to attack malignant cells(Sharon Begley, 12/12).

The Atlantic: The Top 10 Health Stories Of 2011
Coffee is good for you. And coffee is bad for you. Cell phones cause cancer. And cell phones don't cause cancer. Like any other year in health, 2011 was one of conflicting studies. In the end, we're not always sure how to act or what to drink or when to exercise, but we do know more about ourselves and the world we live in thanks to researchers everywhere and the work that they do. However broad or specific their conclusions, however small or large their sample size, medical studies do contribute to our wellbeing simply by existing and, if nothing else, by making us think twice about the things we eat, say, and do on a daily basis (Nicholas Jackson, 12/14).

Zynga, the maker of social gaming hits like FarmVille and CityVille, is set to start trading on the Nasdaq today at a price of $10 per share, valuing the company at $8.9 billion.

The offering comes at the end of a big year for tech IPOs, with companies continually claiming the title of "biggest Internet IPO since Google,"?starting with LinkedIn in May, which was topped by Groupon last month. Now?Zynga is claiming the title?at the current pricing, the company will raise at least $1 billion (the amount could be as high as $1.15 billion, depending on whether the underwriters choose to sell additional shares).

In recent months, the public markets have shown a pattern of embracing Internet companies, then cooling over time. Pandora and Demand Media, for example, are trading well below their opening day prices, and although that's not true for Groupon and LinkedIn, even they have seen prices fall after the early excitement. Zynga's path to an IPO hasn't been smooth either, with the offering delayed after it was first announced in July.

On Thursday, Dun & Bradstreet tech specialist Lee Simmons told?Adweek?that Zynga has some key differences from the other tech companies that went public this year: "For one thing, it's profitable." Zynga, he argued, has shown that free-to-play games, with users paying for virtual goods, are "a sustainable business model." (In its IPO filing, Zynga said it brought in $828 million in revenue and profits of $31 million during the first nine months of 2011?so revenue was up and profits were down from the same period last year.)

Zynga will be the first American social gaming company to go public (competitors like Playdom and Playfish have been acquired for hundreds of millions of dollars) and also the first public firm built primarily on Facebook's application platform.

Not everyone shares Simmons' optimism. Earlier this week, Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia gave Zynga an "underperform" rating, saying that the company's growth seems to be slowing.

Even Simmons said Zynga has an Achilles heel: "It really needs to loosen its dependence on Facebook." By tapping into Facebook's social capabilities, Zynga has built an audience of hundreds of millions of monthly users (it was averaging 227 million at the end of September), but that also makes the company vulnerable if its relationship with Facebook deteriorates. Even Zynga acknowledged the risk in its IPO filing, and it's trying to address the issue with initiatives like an upcoming, stand-alone gaming site.

In defence of the French ? Telegraph Blogs

Allez Les Bleus.

If you comb through the French blogosphere and the comment threads of Le Figaro and Le Monde, you will be struck by how many posters are disgusted with their own government for lobbing a hand-grenade across the Channel.

Hatred of Britain is not much in evidence. On the contrary.

Enough has already been said about the conduct of the Governor of the Banque de France, and about the young man who ? for mystifying reasons ? is now French finance minister.

I will only add that Mr Noyer is very confused if he thinks that Britain should be downgraded because of its higher inflation rate. The rating agencies evaluate default risk consisting of contractual non-payment.

Countries that pursue stealth default through inflation devalue the real burden of their debt and therefore reduce the risk of technical default. This is well understood by the markets. They actually improve their rating potential ? so long as they don't push their luck and go
too far.

(The looming danger in Europe is in any case deflation. The EMU money supply is contracting. That really does raise default risk.)

The deeper point is that Britain has the shock absorber of its own central bank, acting as lender of last resort.

In other words, there is an implicit rating discount on EMU membership. Neither Noyer or Baroin, or Fillon for that matter, seem to understand this. Perhaps they cannot do so, given what it implies about the nature of monetary union.

Sterling has been able to take the strain for the UK instead of the debt market. This has been the side-effect of a 20pc devaluation (or is it now 15pc as sterling claws back?).

British household debt (100pc of GDP) is much higher than in France (52pc), but most of that is mortgage debt in a market with a chronic shortage of housing. The debt is mostly structural.

Britain and France: comparable debt bubbles

All in all, I would say that French and British debt burdens and public finances are just about as bad as each other.

What is striking is that most French readers commenting in the French press have exactly the same view.

Indeed, this brazen affair may ultimately come back to haunt President Sarkozy.

We should have no quarrel the gallant French nation, only with its current leader and with its Enarque elites.

This DIY Solar Powered Robot Kit Is Your Creative Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

I hate being sick. I hate being sick on a Friday. Of all days, right! I hate being sick when the sun is out. Why not pound my head on a rainy day? I pretty much hate everything when I'm sick. So my solution is to make these foolish pacts with myself that I'm going to do everything when I get better. Like I'm going to be a different person. I'm going to go to the gym! To the museums! To volunteer! You just see, when I'm back on my feet, I'll be a better person! And well, that never happens. I just get better and forget about ever being sick. So being sick sucks. It makes you crazy. Having a 6-in-1 DIY Solar Powered Robot Kit for 10 bucks doesn't suck. -CC More »

HPV Test Spots Cervical Cancer Earlier Than Pap Smear: Study (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 15 (HealthDay News) - To catch cervical cancer or the lesions that can lead to it, a human papillomavirus (HPV) test is the best option for women over 30, Dutch researchers report.

Using it in conjunction with the more traditional Pap smear resulted in earlier detection of precancerous lesions and prevented more cervical cancers from developing, said study author Dr. Chris Meijer, a professor of pathology at VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam.

The study is published online Dec. 15 in The Lancet Oncology.

Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by HPV, a virus spread through sexual intercourse. Some HPV strains are more strongly linked with the cancer than others.

The superiority of HPV testing over traditional Paps at finding precancerous cervical lesions is established, Meijer noted. However, his team wanted to see if HPV testing also offered better protection and detection long-term -- in two screenings done over a five-year period.

They found it did.

While five years may sound like a long lag time between screenings, it is not, he said. "The Netherlands already has a screening interval of five years, starting from 30 years of age until 60 years," he said. The program is inexpensive and effective, he added.

In the study, Meijer's team evaluated nearly 45,000 women, aged 29 to 56. Women in one group got a traditional Pap smear and an HPV DNA test. The women in the other group got just the Pap test.

Five years later, all women got both tests.

The researchers looked to see whether HPV tests resulted in fewer high-grade cervical lesions and cervical cancer in the second screening, due to earlier detection and treatment.

In the first screen, the HPV tests found more of the early changes that can precede cervical cancer than the Pap smear alone did.

Five years later, far fewer women in the HPV group had more advanced lesions or cervical cancer than did the Pap-only women.

Four women in the HPV/Pap group were diagnosed with cervical cancer, while 14 in the Pap-only group were.

When they looked at cervical cancer or advanced lesions, 88 in the HPV arm of the study were diagnosed with one or the other compared to 122 in the Pap-alone arm.

The improved protection against advanced lesions, the researchers said, is due to the earlier detection of the precursor lesions. When they were treated, it helped prevent them from progressing.

In an accompanying commentary, scientists from the U.S. National Cancer Institute wrote that the Dutch trial does show the five-year screening interval is safe. But they added that it is unclear if the same results would hold true in a different population with different testing guidelines.

The HPV test can be done using the same specimen collected for the Pap test, Meijer said.

Costs of the tests differ. Meijer said Pap smears are about $38 in the Netherlands, while an HPV test costs about $64. However, the Dutch Minister of Health recently recommended lowering the cost of an HPV test to below that of the traditional Pap.

The new study is "further defining how we can incorporate HPV testing into our screening program," said Dr. Elizabeth Poynor, a gynecologic oncologist and pelvic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital, in New York City.

She noted that she doesn't think the HPV screen will replace the Pap test completely. "It may turn out to be a first-line screen. Stay tuned for more," she said. "Certainly ask your physician if you've had HPV."

In October, three U.S. cancer groups proposed new guidelines for cervical cancer testing, extending intervals between screenings and making other changes. These guidelines, issued by the American Cancer Society and others, call for combination HPV/Pap smear testing for women aged 30 and older.

After three normal Paps, women over 30 can have the test ever two to three years, according to the American Cancer Society.

However, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force remains cautious about the use of the HPV test, standing by the Pap as the best bet for now.

The Dutch study was funded by Zorg Onderzoek Nederland (the Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development).

What we want to see on TV: Handsome politicians

ScienceDaily (Dec. 6, 2011) ? The better the looks of United States Congresspersons, the more television coverage they receive, shows a new study from the University of Haifa recently published in the journal Political Communication. The reason behind this? Television journalists think their viewers prefer to see physically attractive people. "Physical appearance ranked third in the criteria for gaining television coverage, and ranked higher than seniority, position in Congress and legislative activity in this respect," noted the authors of the study.

The study, conducted by University of Haifa researchers Dr. Israel Waismel-Manor of the School of Political Science and Prof. Yariv Tsfati of the Department of Communication, asked 463 Israeli students to rank the physical attractiveness of Members of the 110th United States Congress (2007) based on the official photographs posted on Congress's website. The authors chose that year for its distance from elections, which could otherwise influence media coverage. Israeli students were chosen for this, so as to eliminate the possibility of biases stemming from political views or previous knowledge of Congresspersons, both of which could influence an objective judgment of physical attractiveness. So as to determine that the Israeli assessment of 'good looks' is not culturally different from the American judgment, the researchers compared the Israeli ranking to a ranking given by 30 American students, to find a very high correlation between the two. Furthermore, to eliminate other possible biases, the researchers did not include in the survey politicians who were running for president, nor the Speaker of the House and the majority and minority leaders in the House and Senate. Features that affect media coverage, such as seniority in Congress, political standing (committee assignment and prestige), electoral invulnerability, political ideology, legislative and overall activity, communication effort (press releases), chamber of Congress, media markets, state size, age, gender and race were all controlled for this study.

The authors defined media coverage as an article or item that appeared during 2007 in which a particular Member of Congress speaks or is quoted. Television coverage was surveyed from the national television networks (ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, NBC and PBS). The radio coverage measure was comprised of all NPR news radio programs, while the newspaper measure includes all articles that appeared in USA Today, front to back.

The study shows that physical attractiveness has an effect on television exposure: the better looking the politician, the more TV coverage he or she gains. Yet no significant effect was found for radio or printed news coverage. Following congresspersons' congressional activity and their state's size, physical attractiveness is the third strongest predictor of TV coverage, scoring slightly higher than chamber of Congress, gender, tenure in office, bills sponsored and political standing. After weighting the various factors playing into media exposure, the study found that for every additional score on the 'physical attractiveness index' (a scale of 1 to 10), the politician's television exposure rises by 11.6%.

The researchers have also managed to identify the possible mechanism underlying the attractiveness effect on news coverage. Earlier studies, the researchers explain, have suggested three possible reasons why good looks may effect media exposure:

1. that television journalists believe their viewers want to see beautiful people;

2. that good looks broadcast reliability and respectability, which are highly regarded attributes for journalists, leading them to interview better-looking individuals over others; and

3. that good looks heighten a politician's self-confidence and subsequently these politicians invest more efforts in achieving media exposure.

"The fact that we found no connection between the Member of Congress's media efforts and his or her television coverage rules out the third explanation. The data demonstrated that better-looking people tend to be more media-active, but at the end of the day it does not make a marked difference. The second explanation was also inconsistent with our current results. Had attractive people received more coverage because they were more trustworthy or eloquent (or because they were perceived to possess these characteristics), they should have received more news coverage on the radio and in the newspaper as well, not only on television. The fact that the association between physical attractiveness and news coverage was significant only for television news, and not for radio and print, favors the first explanation mentioned above, that television journalists cover better-looking Congresspersons in order to attract the attention of audiences," said Prof. Tsfati and Dr. Waismel-Manor.

Kathleen Kennedy Talks Jurassic Park 4, Tintin Sequel, and More

Kathleen Kennedy JURASSIC PARK TINTIN Sequel interview slice

If you?re unfamiliar with the name Kathleen Kennedy, I assure you you?re very familiar with her work. Kennedy has been one of Steven Spielberg?s producing partners since Raiders of the Lost Ark, and is responsible for producing films like Schindler?s List, Jurassic Park, The Sixth Sense, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and many many more. Most recently she worked with Spielberg on the director?s two December releases War Horse and The Adventures of Tintin. Steve is currently in New York for the War Horse junket and he got the chance to speak with Kennedy, who gave updates on a number of high profile projects.

While we?ll have the full interview up shortly (as well as updates on other upcoming projects), we wanted to share with you what she had to say about a Tintin sequel, Jurassic Park 4 and the possiblity of a 3D re-release for Jurassic Park today. Kennedy confirmed that they?re working on another entry in the Jurassic Park franchise, revealed that Universal has approached them about a 3D re-release of the original Jurassic Park, and said they?ve already set things in motion for a sequel to Tintin, which could feasibly be released by Christmas 2014 or summer 2015. Hit the jump to see what she had to say.

jurassic-parkRumors of a Jurassic Park 4 have swirled for years, so when asked what it?s going to take to finally get the film off the ground, Kennedy sensibly answered that it all boils down to the script:

?A great script is what it?s gonna take to get a fourth Jurassic Park. We have a very high bar for ourselves because we?re just like the audience, we don?t wanna make the movie if there?s not a reason to make the movie. So we?ve kinda created the dilemma ourselves because it was never intended to be a franchise, so there?s an argument to be made ?Why are you doing a fourth Jurassic Park?? So we?ve gotta find a good reason for why we?re doing a fourth Jurassic Park and we?re in the midst of working on that right now.?

It?s definitely good to hear that a fourth entry in the Jurassic Park franchise isn?t being rushed at the expense of a good story. Kennedy revealed that while a script isn?t currently being written, they?re ?talking about it.? Given the recent success re-releasing older films in 3D, Kennedy confirmed that Universal has approached them about post-converting Jurassic Park to 3D. Whether or not they actually go forward with it depends on whether Spielberg has the time to revisit the pic:

?They have asked us. And I think it?s really gonna come down to making sure Steven has the time, and [director of photography] Janusz [Kaminski] has the time to sit down and go through it and evaluate.?

jurassic-park-imageIt should be noted that Dean Cundey was the director of photography on Jurassic Park while Kaminski shot the sequel The Lost World, so it?s unclear whether Kennedy misspoke or if Kaminski would be the one overseeing the 3D conversion instead of Cundey. Nevertheless, Kennedy mused that the key to a successful post-conversion is getting the filmmaker involved, so it?s doubtful that a Jurassic Park re-release will happen without Spielberg taking a very hands-on approach to the process:

?I?m not a huge proponent of post-conversion, but I think if the filmmaker gets intricately involved in the post-conversion?it?s not just a technological exercise?then I think it can be really, really good and I think Jurassic Park is a perfect example of a movie that could work really, really well as a 3D picture?I also think it?s tricky because unless you framed the movie with [3D] in mind, not all those shots?quick cutting, that kind of thing?it?s not necessarily going to translate, and so that?s why you?ve gotta have the DP and you?ve gotta have the director frame-by-frame involved in the process of that conversion.?

adventures-of-tintin-movie-poster-01While it doesn?t open in the U.S. until Christmas, The Adventures of Tintin has already been doing great business internationally. Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson have made it no secret that they plan to make multiple entries in the franchise, with Jackson primed to direct the sequel. Since he?s obviously very busy with The Hobbit for the next two years, Steve asked if work on a sequel was already underway:

?Oh yeah it is being moved forward, in fact Steven and I were talking about it this morning. We?re working on a script right now, we?ll see a script probably February or March. If we can do some camera capture this summer, which I think we could do, then we would be on track to have the movie either Christmas 2014 or summer 2015, and so that?s what we?re looking at right now.?

Principal photography on both Hobbit films should be completed by early next summer, so it makes sense that they would try to squeeze in a month-long camera capture shoot before Jackson returns to post-production on The Hobbit full-time (Spielberg shot the camera capture for Tintin in 32 days). The intense post-production process of Tintin 2 could then begin, making way for a 2014 or 2015 release.

Here?s the portion of Steve?s interview with Kennedy regarding Jurassic Park and Tintin, followed by the transcript. We?ll have more updates from Kennedy, as well as the full interview, up soon.

jurassic-park-imageWhat?s it gonna take to get a fourth Jurassic Park off the ground?

Kathleen Kennedy: A great script is what it?s gonna take to get a fourth Jurassic Park. So we?ve gotta find a good reason for why we?re doing a fourth Jurassic Park and we?re in the midst of working on that right now.

So is someone writing a script as we speak?

Kennedy: Not writing, but we?re talking about it.

jurassic-park-posterThere?s been some success recently of older films being re-released in 3D. Do you see any of the films that you?ve done that you think could be successful if given a post-conversion 3D for re-release?

Kennedy: I?m not a huge proponent of post-conversion, but I think if the filmmaker gets intricately involved in the post-conversion?it?s not just a technological exercise?then I think it can be really, really good and I think Jurassic Park is a perfect example of a movie that could work really, really well as a 3D picture. I think there?s many movies that don?t, and I think the audience has really gotten wise about the fact that it?s a more expensive ticket price and therefore it should be worth it. So I think obviously you can rest assured that Jim Cameron is getting deeply involved in making sure that that conversion is exactly right. I think with Lion King or frankly certain digital movies, it?s an easier process to make the conversion because that stereo conversion is already something that you can do more effectively digitally than if you?re taking something that was shot on film and you?re now trying to create a digital conversion, you?re often times gonna end up with something muddy and kinda green-looking and the quality won?t be there. I also think it?s tricky because unless you framed the movie with that in mind, not all those shots?quick cutting, that kind of thing?it?s not necessarily going to translate, and so that?s why you?ve gotta have the DP and you?ve gotta have the director frame-by-frame involved in the process of that conversion.

Saying that, I also agree Jurassic Park is just a phenomenal film. Has Universal asked you about it?

Kennedy: They have asked us. And I think it?s really gonna come down to making sure Steven [Spielberg] has the time, and [Director of photography] Janusz [Kaminski] has the time to sit down and go through it and evaluate. [Note: Dean Cundey was the director of photography on Jurassic Park, while Kaminski shot the sequel The Lost World, so it's unclear whether Kennedy misspoke or if Kaminski would be the one overseeing the 3D conversion instead of Cundey]

adventures-of-tintin-movie-imageWell Cameron said on Titanic that they?ve done, I believe, 60 weeks, $18 million, four people looking at every single frame, and then he comes in and looks at the frames. And that?s why the 18 minutes of footage I saw was incredible.

Kennedy: That?s what it?s gotta be. And the problem is, what the studios I think were doing?and I understand it, it?s a business?they were looking at it as ?How can we do this as cheaply as possible?? That was a big mistake, because it?s not about how cheaply it can be done, you?ve gotta look at the properties you think can really have an upside, and then make sure that the quality is there because if the quality?s not there, I think the audience is very, very ready to turn their back on 3D technology unless they really feel the confidence that it?s gonna be done with as much care as a director would take if they were making the movie from scratch.

The first Tintin has been very successful around the world. Mr. Jackson is very caught up in The Hobbit for a while. Assuming that it?s a success in America, when do you envision a sequel being able to move forward? Is it being moved forward right now?

Kennedy: Oh yeah it is being moved forward, in fact Steven and I were talking about it this morning. We?re working on a script right now, we?ll see a script probably February or March. If we can do some camera capture this summer, which I think we could do, then we would be on track to have the movie either Christmas 2014 or summer 2015, and so that?s what we?re looking at right now.

John Dodson blows away TJ Dillashaw, takes ?TUF 14? bantamweight crown

John Dodson blows away TJ Dillashaw, takes ?TUF 14? bantamweight crownLAS VEGAS - John Dodson has too much energy to be contained in a cage. After he knocked T.J. Dillashaw silly, Dodson back flipped off the Octagon, then danced and bounced off the walls.

The tiny bantamweight proved sized doesn't matter when countered by speed and technique at Saturday night's bantamweight finale of "The Ultimate Fighter." Dodson was impossible to hit over the first 90 seconds and when he drilled Dillashaw with a left to the side of the head he went into hyper-speed to get the finish at the 1:54 mark of the first.

The 5-foot-3 Dodson is the first 135-pound champ in the history of the "The Ultimate Fighter," which rolled out its first season featuring the little guys at bantamweight and featherweight. Dodson was already widely recognized as one of the best 125ers in the world, but he took a gamble trying out for the field of bigger guys and came out a huge winner.

"Words cannot describe how I feel right now. Thank you everybody," Dodson told UFC analyst Joe Rogan as much of the Las Vegas crowd at the Palms booed. "I don't care if you hate me, just watch me."

John Dodson blows away TJ Dillashaw, takes ?TUF 14? bantamweight crown

Dillashaw, who trains out of Urijah Faber's Team Alpha Male in California, was a big favorite before the season. There are some who believe he's just a tick behind Faber and another teammate Joe Benavidez, who are both ranked in the top six at bantamweight.

[ Related: More on 'TUF 14 Finale' ]

Dillashaw, a former elite college wrestler, came out in a low stance and tried to establish range with his jab. He looked horrifically slow against the lightning quick Dodson. Dillashaw threw a lazy shot when he got crushed by left punch/arm to the side of his head. He was stunned and stumbled for a second. That's all it took for Dodson to land a short left and drop him. Dodson flew on top of him and got off three more hammerfists when ref Herb Dean jumped in to save Dillashaw.

Dillashaw was going for a leg to try and get the fight under control when Dean stopped it. It may have been a little early to halt the action, but when Dillashaw rose to his feet he wobbled back to the cage.
