Council will vote on MLK parade legislation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville's annual parade honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is less than two weeks away, but coming up with how to pay for it is still up for debate.

Councilman Reggie Brown is asking Jacksonville City Council to come up with $30,000 in taxpayer money to make the parade a city-wide event.

"Right now, the target is 20,000 people, that's not good," says Council Brown.

Brown think the extra money can provide funding to other MLK weekend events along with the parade.

The legislation stalled in committee, Councilman Brown tells Action News it will go before the entire council for a vote on Tuesday.

Mayor Alvin Brown thinks public-private partnership can save the MLK parade, even if taxpayer dollars are not provided.

"Take it to the bank, the parade is going to happen," says Mayor Brown, who helped save the Light Parade on the St. Johns River late last year through private donations.
